One element of the Hero's Journey / Transformation that is often forgotten yet can help to build the Herald's / Mentor's Character / Archetype is the fact that, often, the Hero is not unknown. In fact, it is common that the Hero has been watched and his or her capabilities known - often there is waiting and expectation for the time when the Hero is ready to fulfil his or her Dharma / destiny.

In The Recruit (2004), Pacino has been watching Farrell.

In Star Wars (1977), Obi Wan has been keeping tabs on Luke.

In The Godfather (1972), the Don is waiting for Michael to join the fold.

In Dances with Wolves (1990), the General watches John from atop the hill.
