It has been a long morning and you need a mental break. You start thinking of your weekend plans and jump on your messaging program to make plans with a friend. You have the movie times and a chat box up on your screen and what happens, your supervisor walks up behind you! You think to yourself Murphy's law is in full effect. What do you do when you get busted surfing or chatting at work? The situation all depends on how you react and handle yourself. Here are some helpful techniques/excuses you may be able to use:1. Before we get into the problematic issue with the current state of the American work ethic; I wish to apologize in advance for my bluntness and comments in this article. Now then about the American work ethic, it is lacking in many regards and I wish it were not so. Many say that they are hard workers and really do their best and that their generation is hard working and they have learned this hard work ethic from their father and grandfather and they had learned it prior to that from their fathers and grandfathers.Indeed this is what everyone tells me, but everyone does not have good work ethic in America and so many who claim to be hard workers are completely lacking. Many people believe that if they go to work every day for somebody else, then they are not self-employed. I read a great quote by Brian Tracy that I thought could use repeating:"Always view yourself as self-employed. The biggest mistake that you can ever make in life is ever to think that you work for anybody else but yourself. You are self-employed, you are the president of your own person services corporation".Write that out and pin it up in your office, cubicle, or whatever you consider your work space. Remind yourself of this fact every day and remember that you have a choice. Even though you have chosen to walk into the same office and do the same work for the past 5 years, it does not mean that you have to make that same choice every day for the rest of your life. I approached her sliding glass window and stood in back of a gentleman whom I assumed she was helping. After about three minutes, I realized he was waiting for the office manager and she could have acknowledged my presence. I stepped up to the window; she did not say good morning; she did not smile; she just glared at me. I started to speak; she pointed a finger at a clip board with a paper to fill out. I placed the completed sheet in front of her, perhaps expecting a thank you or a smile or at least ‘have a seat; the doctor will see you soon’.
