    20 Business Telephone Etiquette Tips
    Today's technology has many advantages and a great many disadvantages. I often wonder how our society survived without a mobile telephone. I wonder how I survived without the Internet. I was connected when Prodigy was first introduced on the scene. The pharmaceutical company for which I worked provided a laptop to help me manage my territory or I may have not been so well connected.One disadvantage of a mobile telephone is the lack of telephone etiquette. People seem to have no manners when talking on their phones. Personally, I do not care to hear another person's conversation.     A few months back I wrote an article about a list which I had started some 10 years ago when I began managing projects. This list is a hodge-podge of things which worked and things which didn't. I've added items as years have years passed, sometimes subtracted and also updated statements to be more relative as I've grown personally and professionally. In that last article I focused specifically on 5 common reasons project managers fail and fall down. Today I'd like to balance that article with 5 ways to succeed.     If you like to plan your day the night before, you are ahead of the crowd. But for the rest of us, planning is a general thing that will simply consist of a list of items to be accomplished. The list is tackled in an importance order and interruptions take a toll of what happens. In my office, I like to get in early to out my routine in order. Unfortunately, I do not always get the quiet time as I have a colleague that also comes in early and likes to talk about what he is doing (and he interrupts every 3 or 4 minutes or so). So how can you plan your day without worrying about the constant interruptions and get everything accomplished? I do my planning by setting up a daily routine.     Welding rods get no respect. Out in the field I've seen guys throwing 50lb. rod cans from the truck onto the ground, torching cans open diagonally, beating the wrong end open with a chipping hammer and every other conceivable tool, and leaving open rod cans out in the open.Let's look at what's wrong with each…First and foremost, ALWAYS open the "right" end of the can. Some cans and boxes even say "open other end", or "don't open this end", or "the other end moron!." (last one made up by me.) The reason you need to open the right end is because you can damage the flux coating. You want to open it on the side where the rod is bare for the stinger, or electrode holder. There's a lot less chance of damaging the flux that way. 7018 is very prone to flux damage while 6010 is a lot tougher.<
