The Principle(s) of Negative Value - A Procurement Article
Some years ago while researching and writing a book on the subject of industrial Buyer & Sales relationships, I also wrote a follow up chapter for future endeavors which has rolled around in the back of my mind ever since. The piece was entitled “The Value of Value”.Alright, I admit it was and could still be, construed as something of a Procurement diatribe but the purpose both then and now is to assist venders recognize and comprehend how Buyers perceive and respond, to the levels of service we receive from distributors and manufacturers when there are problems. (Notice I didn’t say, “reps”)After 20 years of battling repetitive and inane situations and shortfalls, I thought it was time for someone to get it out into the open and talk about it plainly. Forget the graphs and the charts an

    Inventory Management
Inventory management refers to the process of managing the stocks of finished products, semi-finished products and raw materials by a firm. Inventory management, if done properly, can bring down costs and increase the revenue of a firm. How much one should invest in inventory management? The answer to this question depends on the volume and value of inventory as a percentage of the total assets of a firm. The importance of inventory management varies according to industries. For example, an automobile dealer has very high inventories, sometimes as high as 50 per cent of the total assets, whereas in the hotel industry it may be as low as 2 to 5 per cent. The process of inventory management is a continuous one and there are various kinds of solutions available. It is advisable to employ special
There are a lot of less than forthright organizations that allegedly help individuals sell their inventions to industry. In all my years of working as a patent lawyer, I have never come across a single person who ever used one of these organizations to effectively market or sell their invention. However, I have met several who successfully marketed their inventions themselves.

Before you take any steps to market your invention, you should take a few preliminary steps.

Preliminary Patent Search - A preliminary patent search is generally a good first step. A preliminary search of various patent offices can be conducted for a reasonable fee (just contact a patent agent/lawyer), and it is even possible to conduct one for free (see the US patent office at http://www.uspto.gov/)

Patent Application - Don’t publically disclose your invention until after a patent application is filed. Publically disclosing the invention before filing a patent application can potentially ruin the chances of ever being granted a valid patent. In fact, many Companies will not even talk to you until you have filed a patent application.

Prepare a Formal Information Package - You should prepare an informative and concise information package describing you, your invention and the potential market your invention reaches. The package should include color photographs of the invention, and a one page executive summary.

A Golden Opportunity for Women Business Owners in a $15 Billion Market
The federal, state and local government agencies throughout the United States are looking to do business with women-owned firms like never before. One of the key reasons is that women-owned firms in the U.S. are growing like never before. The federal government, along with many states and local government agencies, maintain goals regarding the contracts they target for women-owned businesses. The federal government’s goal is 5% of the more than $300 billion in federal contracts which amounts to $15 billion in business opportunities that should be won by women-owned firms. This is both good news and bad news. The bad news is that this goal has never been reached. The good news is that there is a greater opportunity now than ever before for women-owned firms to tackle and win contracts in the governm

How the Use of Steel Containers is Impacting on the Freight Shipping Industry
The use of steel containers by the freight shipping industry is having a significant affect on transportation costs and practices.Steel containers are fast becoming the preferred option for shipments of cargo around the world. As they can be stacked easily they have helped to reduce freight shipping costs. Furthermore the products that they contain are more secure because they are sealed prior to being shipped and are only opened once they have arrived at their destination. These containers are being used to ship a variety of different goods across the globe. From food products to personal care items and machinery, the freight shipping industry is increasingly using steel containers to transport freight. The ability to move large volumes of freight easily and cheaply is vitally importa

Your Full Value: Do Your Customers Know It?
Do your customers (and potential customers) know the full value you bring to the table?   Before you automatically answer, “Of course, they do!”, consider this:   I was at a nail appointment recently and my nail technician mentioned that she had just put her father’s house on the market through a local REALTOR and had received an offer within 2 days.  She was probably going to accept the offer, since it was very close to asking price.  However, she then made the following comment:  “In fact, we’re going to go back to our REALTOR and ask her to reduce her commission because it sold so fast, and she doesn’t have to do any more advertising OR MUCH WORK on it, so we think she should reduce her commission.”   Yikes!  Being a former REALTOR myself, I know that the effort involved in getting an offer and

Prototype - It is a lot easier to sell a product if potential buyers can see, touch and feel the product. Building a working prototype is often a key step in selling your invention. Of course, some products are difficult to prototype, in which case a non-working mock-up may have to do. In any event, create the most professional prototype or mock-up you can.

Obtain Financing - Building prototypes and filing patent applications require funds. Finding that initial start up funding is often difficult; however, there are two tried and true methods, namely partnerships and incorporations. A signed partnership agreement is one way for a few people to pool their financial resources into a project. If several investors are involved, then an incorporated company is a better method. Essentially, the company takes ownership of the invention and the investors contribute money to the company in exchange for shares. The number and price of the shares can be tailored to suit the particular needs of the project.

Now that we have dealt with some of the preliminary issues, let us look at the mechanics of selling your invention to a company. The actual steps in the process are as follows:
