    Kaziranga national park, homeland of the Great Indian One Horned Rhinoceros, is one of the largest protected wildlife areas in India. It is inhabited by the world's largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses, as well as many mammals, including tigers, elephants, panthers and bears, and thousands of birds.

    The park is located on the bank of great brahmaputra river in the far of north east india. The park lies in an area of 430 sq kms between golaghat and nagaon district of Assam. It included - 51.92% of grass land, 29.13% of moist mixed deciduous forest, 7.21% sandy area, 6 .62% of water bodies, and 5.21% of swampy/ marshy area of parks.

    The park was first established in 1908, as a reserve forest. It is declared as game sanctuary in 1917 and open for visitors in 1938. The park upgraded as a wildlife sanctuary in 1950 and announced a national park in 1974. The park was enlisted in the list of world heritage site in December 1985. In august 2006, the park is announced as a tiger reserve under the project tiger scheme.
