Tradition and Past Business Assumptions May Be the Root Causes of the Disease
For a troubled company, it is prudent to challenge all “sacred cows” – those old and sacrosanct business assumptions. It is probable that some of these old “sacred cows” which were based on prior erroneous perceptions and assumptions that got the company into trouble. In times of rapid change, a strategic failure is often caused by an incorrect or false assumption. We console ourselves by telling ourselves that we have gone through the present problem before and hence are able to tide through it again. Often, we also falsely assume that this change is temporary, or that the impact would be limited and hence can be ignored. Success has got into the management’s heads and become their greatest root cause of the disease. The prevailing mindset is that “we have been successful and everything worked in the past and failures will not happen here.” Then the company’s profit erodes and their stock plummets. In a similar vein, we may dismiss the pain in our body such as a headache or stomach ache and

A Duck Walked in to a Staff Meeting: Comedy Techniques to Lighten Up Business
Used effectively and positively, humor can improve the workplace in many ways. Employees who laugh regularly are physically and emotionally healthier, not to mention more productive and creative. And let’s face it – it’s more fun to work with people who bring joy and laughter to work than those who suck the life out of everyone around them.As a comedian and corporate stress management expert, I’ve been teaching organizations how to blend humor and business for almost fifteen ten years. During that time, I’ve found that many of the tricks comedians use to find the funny in everyday life can be easily and successfully used in the business world. Here are some strategies for using humor at work:1. Accentuate the positive. In order to have a positive influence your humor must not be derogatory or divisive. Prevent negative humor from creeping into the workplace by sticking to (try duct tape or those yellow sticky pads) the following rules:• Use your own funny stories. Humor that comes from personal experien

Your Business is Making Money – Now What?
You’ve done it! You’ve built your business and it is now making money. Now what? Do you sit and watch the money roll in? That wouldn’t be a wise decision because it doesn’t happen that way.Even though your business is now making money, it doesn’t mean you stop doing what you’ve done to get it to this point. You need to keep marketing, networking, optimizing your website and whatever else you were doing before. Why? Because before you know it, the business could fall. Here’s a quote that is a perfect example:“Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”~Will Rogers~I have a friend who is in a service business. He was doing really well, so well that he stopped marketing his website. He even stopped looking for clients. Complacency became his friend. Then it happened. Before he knew it, his clients, one by one, went elsewhere. He was left without a single client. My friend had to scramble to pick up the pieces again. He optimized his website, he submitted the UR

    Self-Coaching
Salespeople are often alone as they make sales calls. Many say they don’t get coached. Most are hungry for good feedback and would benefit greatly from it.Just like an artist who can be his/her own best subject (because he/she is always available), you can be an effective self coach. After each call, critique the call by specifically reviewing your strengths and areas for improvement. Focus on one area at a time and set a plan on how to improve in that area.August, if things slow down a bit, is a good time to step back after each call and debrief the call and your performance. • Preparation – Did I set a measurable objective before the call? – Did I do the necessary homework so I was fully prepared? – Did I meet with the right person/decision maker?• Opening – Did I build personal rapport and set the focus of the meeting and check if that the client’s expectations?• Identifying Needs – Did I spend enough (more) time understanding needs vs. pitching? – Did

    Critical Change
Change is critical to your success and happiness. I cringe to think what might happen in our lives if we don't allow ourselves the opportunity to make the appropriate changes. Sure, we can pretend that we don't need to change, that there is nothing wrong with our lives. Then, however, we soon forget the consequences of not taking action and making the changes we know we need to make. One story that illustrates this point well is from Samuel Whitman. The ice storm wasn't generally destructive. True, a few wires came down, and there was a sudden jump in accidents along the highway.... Normally, the big walnut tree could easily have borne the weight that formed on its spreading limbs. It was the iron wedge in its heart that caused the damage. The story of the iron wedge began many years ago when the lad of a white-haired farmer toiled on his father's homestead. The sawmill had then only recently been moved from the valley, and the settlers were still finding tools and odd pieces of equipment scattered abou

Economic Development Marketing Tricks to Watch Out For
Anyone who knows about Economic Development Associations realizes that they are forever trying to put a good spin on things. For instance if their city is the number one city for car thieves, they will find some other statistic to plug. Such as our city suburbs have the lowest murder rate of any city in the state. In fact sometimes it is what they don't tell you which is actually very telling. One interesting trick that suburban areas use is that they will take all the business licenses in the city many of which are home based business licenses and read the names and tell people the percentages of International Businesses in the area. In actuality most of these so-called international businesses are really multi-level marketing companies, which put the "International" on the end of their business name to impress the down-line they try to sign up.Pretty sneaky trick isn't it? Well indeed it is and most business owners or people moving into the area never have a clue and never think about it again. Still it is plug
