Why Should You - Why Should Anyone Take Action? .Why Should You Take Action? Why be successful?...Why be anything? For some reason, I feel struck by the importance asking difficult questions. In my experience, it's the answers to these types of questions that make or break a person. Some questions are naturally much more simple and straight forward than others. Why start a business? Why set goals for yourself? Etc.The answers to these questions are pretty simple really. You could easily have someone else answer them for you. But, when you think about taking action, being successful, making sacrifices, or more precisly what it means to be the type of person who does these things...Aristotle suggested that as is our nature, we as people are what we repeatedly do. He then went on to state that excellence, is therefore, not just a single act, but a habit.I think other people can share with us why certain traits or habits are important for them, but not why they should be important to us.I'm really just thinking out loud here for the most part. Of course I could ramble on about pay PICK YOUR CLASSES = SHOWS While your firm is part of an Industry, in times of unsettled business there are two avenues you can take to garner more sales. And, if you do not have school in your family, there might be your own remembrance of the excitement of starting afresh and learning something new. This is a great time to review your trade show program in the same way you prepare for school. PICK YOUR SCHOOL = INDUSTRY A business school question - Are you a railroad or a transportation company? In other words, what business are you in? If you consider your industry a railroad, you will be concerned with rolling stock, laying track and logistics. If you consider your industry to be transportation, you will consider the railroad as a method of transportation - the same principles apply whether you run rail cars or airplanes. Like Bob, I think it is a sad commentary today, that we have to police businesses. Whatever happened to going into business to provide a needed service, being loyal to employees, and keeping promises. It seems like no one today is concerned about doing good business or being ethical in the process. Our forefathers would be ashamed at what this society has come to. I know I am. Chuck and I teach our students how to run a good business, by being ethical, and making sure that everyone is happy. We run our business using the adage, “The customer is always right”. We know, however, from looking at others in business both on and offline, that we are in the minority. For most it is all about making money. They don’t care who they have to step on, how many lies they tell, just “show them the money”. As I pointed out in my article regarding “The Almighty Buck”, this should not be your only incentive for going into business, and if it is, This is a great time to review your trade show program in the same way you prepare for school. Do they ask you lots of questions when you tell them what you do?Every great elevator speech needs to answer these key questions:1. Who am I? (introduce yourself)2. What business am I in?3. What group of people do I service? (be specific – do you have a niche?)4. What is my USP (Unique Selling Proposition)? What makes me different from the competition?5. Having our own business for the last 28 years has given us a tremendous amount of freedom and opportunity. However, there were some tough times that we could have avoided had we been smarter. One of the easiest ways to start your own business and get up and running as soon as possible is to associate with someone who has already done a lot of the preliminary work for you. Network marketing is offering tremendous opportunities for many people who would otherwise waste time looking for a business or be stuck in traditional jobs with all the limitations thereto. For those of you who are thinking of stating your own business or already have, I offer the following thoughts for your consideration.1.Don’t RE-INVENT THE WHEEL. Take advantage of all of the resources that are available to you. There is very little that is new to the world anymore. Seek out those resources. One of the meanings of this is that you do not have to be right to win a lot of money. Even if the market fundamentals would predict otherwise, when there is a stream in a certain direction you’d better go with it, or you would face a terrible resistance.Changes in organizations are dealing with the same phenomenon; the market – represented by the majority of the employees – are against change and so they will resist. And you should be glad that they do. If the majority of the people within the organization start running to an end (goal) that is unclear you should worry. However, you d? need momentum at some point in time to get things rolling. Much is to do about balancing energy. Most people do not favour changes. And they are right. It can be tiring. We all have our habits. We eat what we like and we do not try too many new things. First of all because it costs time to search for new and exotic recipes. One is to hunker down and bore deeply into your niche, the other is to expand into other industries. In both cases, you may want to look at trade shows beyond the ones you have on your current docket. For example, if going deeper into your industry niche, you can consider local or regional shows, international expos, or shows which focus on discrete research in your niche allowing you an intellectual advantage. If expanding into other industries, you have a wide range of choices but the advice is to research, research, research before investing. PICK YOUR TEACHERS = FIND THE BEST FOR YOU Not all executives of Fortune 500 companies went to an Ivy League or MIT caliber school, but considering the vast number of colleges and universities, a disproportionate number of these executives are graduates of the elite universities. Translated to trade shows, that means you should align yourself with well regarded shows, organizers attuned to forward thinking, and professional organization and management. PICK YOUR MAJOR = MARKETING MESSAGE When you declare a major, it is your intention to complete the requirements and pursue a career in that field. People remember that you started off in theatre, switched to psychology, graduated in medieval history and then became a salesman. At a trade show, you do not get a second chance to change your marketing message. All the promotion before the show, the exhibit and goodies need to revolve around The Message.
