Why You Should Never Give A Key To Your Office To An Employee as part of post storm reconstruction. All needing high performance communications infrastructure – whether for basic entertainment or for network communications. Let’s look at the existing telecom tool bag for assets. Maybe not a close friendship but one that gives you and them a comfort zone that differs from when they were first hired. As more trust is built or gained through ongoing working relations, usually everyone lowers their guard a bit and begins to settle into a “working relationship”.It’s not an uncommon practice or unusual expectation to offer a key to your Office Manager or a key personal assistant (no pun intended). In fact, I’ve found it to be quite normal that ranking personnel have access to certain files and other business trade secrets that are not available to each and every colleague. That doesn’t mean they know every asset of the company and have access to all things. However an implied trust is given and whatever they learn, is to spur on the company’s business and enable them to do the best job for you as their employer. If you as an employer do not have certain “fail safe” tactics in place you are setting yourself up for a hard lesson. I’m Five Tips For Hiring The Right Salesperson At first glance the project appeared impossible. Here we were, in the middle of the desert, 500 miles from the nearest real city – and we needed to install a campus telecom network covering an area of about 150 square kilometers. Objective was to make campus communications function at the same level as a city-based industrial campus. Memories of military leadership exercises came to mind, where with a limited number of tools you faced an expectation that with a bit of tenacity and creativity under the right conditions your team could make sea shells do HF radio. Are you ready to make the right hiring choices? According to a recently released survey of 16,000 businesses nationwide, Manpower reported that hiring will improve in the fourth quarter of 2003. Specifically, the staffing company found that 22% of companies expect to hire more staff in the last quarter of the year. If you plan to hire any salespeople, you’ll want to avoid some common hiring mistakes.Hiring salespeople can be particularly challenging. When you think about it, it makes sense. Salespeople are good at selling and sometimes you can be sold a bill of goods. In any hiring decision, it’s easy to make a mistake. In sales, your odds of hiring the right person are 50/50 at best.To make sure you don’t sabotage your chances of success, try these five tips:1. Use an assessment instrument. A good assessment, and there are many on the market, will often tell you what your candidate won’t. Make sure your assessment instrument matches well to the type of selling you do. For example, you don’t want to hire someone who is great at transactional sales i We go back to basic telecom engineering. Your task is to take a budget, existing or emerging technology, a relatively clear set of objectives – and then design a flexible solution that completely meets and exceeds everybody’s expectations. Of course this must be ahead of schedule and under budget. Simple, right? So in the middle of the desert we incorporate new technologies, such as wireless bridging to connect major campus locations, VoIP to take advantage of lower startup and operating costs for both internal and external communications, a VSAT link to the home office, and then gateways for network connectivity and voice transit/termination. Of course this must be ahead of schedule and under budget. Simple, right? When starting up a business you will hear over and over that you need to be unique in your marketing. You want to get the consumer's attention. There is a lot of competition out there, so being unique is essential. What you must do is distinguish your product or services from the competition. Some businesses offer products or services that are already unique. Others must find the unique niche in their business. By being unique in your marketing message, you will attract the notice of more soon-to-be customers. Is it worth the effort? Definitely. Being different in your marketing can make your business:memorable, competitive, and special to your target audience. But how different should you be? Can you go too far? Sometimes you can be so unique that you turn off consumers. Or perhaps you miss the target with your marketing. Surprise, all are available in our reconstruction zone.Cold calling has to be one of the most feared aspects of every sales person's and business owner's day. With some important key tips, you can make cold calling painless and enjoyable and as easy as calling a friend. Here are 7 key ways to jump start your cold calls:1. Research Your MarketBefore you start your cold calls it's important that you be prepared so your prospect feels you really do understand their situation. Research the company you are calling, identify what issues they are having based on your other clients in their same industry and ask others in your company the main reasons why people buy your product or service. The better prepared you are about discussing you prospect's issues, the easier it will be to allow the conversation to flourish.2. Change Your Mental ExpectationsTraditional selling has always taught us that our main goal of the cold call should be an appointment or a sale. With that mental focus, what happens is our mind is focused on the end goal before we even have a conversation with the person we ar You might say “well, you know wireless and cable have little capacity – it is not suitable for the high traffic links needed to run a business or entertainment. Hmm… Looking at marketing materials for companies such as Gigabeam (www.gigabeam.com) it appears we can now sling up to about 10Gbps through the air – that is a pretty healthy bridge. You can sling 10Gbps up to a mile, 1Gbps a couple miles, and other capacities down to 512 Mbps up to about 30 miles line of sight. Probably enough to meet the needs of Morris Point, Minnesota. Probably enough to meet the neighborhood needs of Long Beach, California as well. OK, the capacity argument is history. Wireless can actually provide much higher “line” capacity than existing copper cable plant, and it is a heck of a lot less expensive. Next argument… Hmm… starting to run short on arguments for replacing existing models of “land line” communications with wireless? Don’t feel lonely. About the only model of outside cable plant being installed is fiber intended for use by telephone companies to increase line capacity to homes in an effort to compete with cable television companies. Verizon’s FIOS will carry not only >50Mbps Internet access to the home, it will also handle entertainment channels quite nicely. Far cry from plain old telephone service (POTS). So Verizon’s intent is not to deliver high performance POTS, it is to deliver telephone, CATV, and high speed Internet. Also cool. As a competitive entertainment and telecommunications project, we look forward to more creative and useful ideas coming from all telecom companies. I personally do not care if my entertainment comes from Comcast, DirecTV, SBC, Verizon, or Time Warner – I simply want the most advanced entertainment and communications available. I do not care if it is over fiber, copper, or through the air. I just want 450 TV channels, Internet that provides whatever content I want with no delay, and an effective way to communicate with any telephone or presence device to any point in the world. However I live in a very technically advanced part of the United States, have not suffered a catastrophic natural disaster, and am not at the mercy of a single telecom provi
